A Senior Golf Privilege Could be Perfect For You

The Seniors’ Golf Association (SGA) currently has over 400 members, which represents approximately 35% of all Members Holding a Golf Privilege (MHGP). For both current and prospective SGA members, we wanted to make sure that you are aware of a significant opportunity when turning age 70 or higher — the Senior Golf Privilege (SGP).

This program was designed and approved in 2019 to complement the Active member Senior Program, which had historically not been available to MHGP.

Now, any MHGP reaching the age of 70 can transfer their golf privilege to a Senior Golf Privilege (SGP). You are not required to transfer your membership status from Active to Senior, but you may do so (if your age and OC tenure qualifies). The combination of these two senior programs yields a significant monthly dues savings of approximately $390 per month (a 50% reduction in both monthly golf and regular dues based on the 2024–2025 fee structure).

The concept for a SGP is a full golf privilege for play and tee time reservations on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Golf play on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays are available at the relevant daily green fees.

Let’s get into more details on how it works.

SGP Schedules and SGA Tournaments

The SGP offers a curated schedule to ensure members can make the most of their golfing experience. Since SGA Home and Away events, as well as in-house SGA tournaments, are scheduled on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays, they are all ideal for SGP holders.

The SGA organizes Home/Away events with 12 different golf and country clubs, including Monterey Peninsula, Pasatiempo, Half Moon Bay, Stanford, Silverado, Lake Merced, Meadow (in Marin) and more.

SGA in-house tournaments include a Spring Tune-Up, Four-Ball, two-day SGA Championship, and a year-end event. Each of these SGA events (both at home and away) includes two meals — breakfast/lunch for morning shotguns or lunch/dinner for afternoon shotguns. Entry fees for all SGA events generate a financial credit to your quarterly food and beverage minimums.

In addition, the SGA has at least one trip per year to a popular golf resort.

Holiday Flexibility

The Olympic Club understands that holidays and course maintenance might disrupt the typical schedule. For those instances when the golf courses are closed on a Tuesday (either for maintenance or when a holiday falls on a Monday), Senior Golf Privilege

Holders will have their normal access on Fridays of those weeks; those Fridays become “virtual Tuesdays.”

How to learn more about SGP?

The Membership Department is happy to assist any MHGP thinking about transferring to a SGP. Other than limiting privilege play to three weekdays, the only lost privilege is eligibility for weekend MHGP tournaments. So if the Jim Lucius Shootout, Presidents Cup, Armageddon, St Paddy’s or Christmas tournaments are your favorites, then the SGP is not for you yet. However, the SGA tournaments and Home/Away events can be a very enjoyable substitute, given the sizable monthly savings in cost.

Conclusion

The Olympic Club’s Senior Golf Privilege is more than just a discount; it’s a carefully crafted program that allows senior golfers to continue enjoying their golf passion while also offering the opportunity to become Senior Active members — the combination yielding significant monthly savings. The SGP initiative, combined with all of the SGA advantages, exemplifies The Olympic Club’s commitment to providing exceptional golf experiences for all of its members.
