Russell Hafferkamp

Sport: Water Polo
Inducted to Hall of Fame in: 2021

Russ Hafferkamp (b. 1954) is no stranger to The Olympic Club Hall of Fame, having been inducted twice before as a member of the 1982–1986 and 1992–1995 water polo teams. As a 12-time competitor in the FINA Masters World Championships, a three-time MVP in U.S. National Championships, and a perennial All-American selection, his current induction as an individual demonstrates his contribution to the sport of water polo and The Olympic Club. His record as a multiple national and world champion, spanning four decades in Open and Masters competition, is unmatched.

Hafferkamp played several sports growing up, before discovering water polo. Recruited to play at UC Santa Barbara, he was first team NCAA All-American. After college, he played for the U.S. National team, spent a year as a player/coach in Australia and then moved to the Bay Area in 1983. He joined The Olympic Club to play on the Open water polo team, which won five straight AAU Indoor National Championships and three Hawaiian Invitationals. A few years later, the team won another three national titles and three Hawaiian Invitationals from 1992 through 1995.

Beyond the pool, Hafferkamp has contributed to the governance of both USA Water Polo and the Club. In the late 1980s, he was instrumental in the creation of a national Masters program, in which he continues to compete today. Most recently, the OC’s 50+ team won gold and silver medals competing at the FINA World Masters Championships in Montreal and Gwangju, South Korea respectively.

Hafferkamp has been a coach for many collegiate teams, as well as for the OC women’s water polo team. He has also spent many hours on the Club’s basketball courts, playing in leagues as well as the Club’s traveling Masters teams. In 2008, Hafferkamp became only the second water polo player to be inducted into the Masters International Swimming Hall of Fame and in 2022, he was inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame.
